Introduce Veggie-Loaded Comfort Foods

Introducing children to vegetarian cuisine has been such a rewarding experience for me. I think the key is starting with familiar foods and then gradually incorporating new ingredients. For example, I made veggie-loaded quesadillas with black beans, cheese, and finely chopped veggies—they were a big hit because they felt like a comfort food.

I've found that letting kids get involved in the kitchen is a game-changer. I'd have them help roll meatless "meatballs" or sprinkle cheese on a veggie pizza. When they're part of the process, they're so much more likely to try the dish.

One tip I swear by is making vegetables fun—like turning roasted sweet potato rounds into mini "pizzas" with tomato sauce and cheese. Also, pairing new ingredients with ones they already love, like serving hummus with colorful veggie sticks, works wonders.

I'd love to know if these ideas get featured in your article—I'm excited to share!

Empower Kids with Safe Kitchen Tools

One of the best tips for helping to get kids involved in the kitchen is to actually get them involved from a young age! Kids love to be involved in "grown-up" things that are chores to adults, and the best thing you can do is to allow them to be involved, letting them help you mix, chop, and even turn on appliances like a blender. With our son, we purchased him kid-safe knives to encourage his involvement and interest in cooking with us. The more he is involved with the process, the more he also likes to eat the healthy food we cook!

Make Cooking a Fun, Bonding Experience

A powerful way to engage children in healthy eating is to have them be involved in very simple activities such as selecting vegetables in the store or mixing ingredients for a meal. When my cousin's kids were around me, I realized they were quite interested in eating things they had had a hand in making. I always used to let them select between healthy options, say carrots or bell peppers for a snack, so that they felt involved but not overwhelmed.

Cooking together was great fun, made for good bonding, and, of course, increased their willingness to sample some new foods. For instance, they were very much into making homemade pizzas with a whole-wheat crust and lots of colorful toppings. My advice to other parents, really, is to keep it fun and never apply pressure. If kids see cooking as play instead of work, then they'll be more inclined toward healthier choices anyway.
